If you've started a magnesium supplement and felt nothing after a few days, you're not alone. The honest answer is that magnesium doesn't work like caffeine or paracetamol — it works in layers, and the timeline depends on three things: the form, your starting level, and what you're hoping it does.
Week 1 — the gut and the muscles
In the first few days, the most common things people notice are fewer muscle twitches (especially eyelid flutter and calf cramps at night) and a slightly steadier digestion. Both come from magnesium replenishing the easiest-to-reach stores in your body. If you took magnesium oxide or high-dose citrate you may also notice a laxative effect — that's not the magnesium working, that's it pulling water into the bowel.
This is why magnesium glycinate is our pick: it's bound to glycine, absorbs gently, and doesn't send you running.
Week 2 — sleep and evening calm
Most of the sleep effect — falling asleep faster, fewer 3am wake-ups, deeper morning recovery — shows up around the second week. Magnesium contributes to normal nervous system function and normal psychological function* and works best when it's consistent. One dose isn't a sleeping pill. A daily ritual is a slow climb.
Week 4-6 — the slower wins
Stamina, recovery between workouts, that diffuse "steadier" feeling people talk about — these take longer because they require your tissue magnesium levels to actually climb. In a UK adult eating an average diet, that's typically four to six weeks of daily intake at the right dose.
This is why we sell our 3-bottle bundle — three bottles is 135 days. That's enough time to give magnesium a fair trial.
What if I feel nothing after six weeks?
Three honest possibilities. One: the form is wrong — you took oxide or citrate and lost most of it. Two: the dose is too low. We use 300 mg elemental magnesium per serving from glycinate, which is at the upper end of the well-tolerated range. Three: magnesium wasn't the missing piece. Sleep is multi-factor; if your magnesium status was already adequate, you might need to look at sleep timing, evening light, or stress.
The Nuvra formula
One capsule, twice a day, with breakfast and dinner. 300 mg magnesium glycinate, KSM-66® ashwagandha, turmeric and Vitamin B6. UK-made, vegan, batch-numbered. Give it 4–6 weeks. Most people decide somewhere in week two.
