If you've looked at ashwagandha supplements in the UK, you've probably noticed the same three letters keep appearing: KSM-66. It's not a marketing flourish — it's a specific, branded, clinically-studied root extract that costs noticeably more than generic ashwagandha. We chose it for Nuvra 4-in-1. Here's why.
What ashwagandha actually is
Withania somnifera is a small evergreen shrub native to India. The root has been used in Ayurveda for over 3,000 years to support the body through periods of physical and mental demand. The active compounds are a family of steroidal lactones called withanolides.
The cheap-extract problem
Generic ashwagandha is often a leaf-and-root blend, sometimes solvent-extracted, with inconsistent withanolide content — anywhere from 1.5% to 5% depending on the batch. Two capsules of supermarket-shelf ashwagandha can deliver wildly different doses.
What KSM-66® does differently
- Root-only. KSM-66 uses only the root, not the leaf. The leaf is regulated as a food additive in some markets, the root is the traditional Ayurvedic source.
- Standardised withanolides ≥5%. Every batch is tested. You know what's in the capsule.
- Green-chemistry extraction. Water-based, no alcohol or harsh solvents. The proprietary process retains the full spectrum of the root rather than isolating a single compound.
- Clinically studied. KSM-66 has been used in over 24 published human trials, more than any other ashwagandha extract on the market. That gives clinicians and regulators something to actually anchor recommendations to.
Why we paid the licence fee
Generic ashwagandha is roughly a third of the cost. We could have used it and our gross margin would have been better. But the point of Nuvra is that you take it daily for weeks — and at that cadence, batch-to-batch consistency matters more than spec-sheet headlines. KSM-66 is the version with the published research and the standardised root. If we're going to ask you to swallow it twice a day for two months, we'd like to know what's actually in the capsule.
How we use it
500 mg of KSM-66 per daily serving in Nuvra 4-in-1, paired with magnesium glycinate (the calming form), turmeric and Vitamin B6 — the cofactor that makes amino acid metabolism actually run.
